What Not to Wear at a Wedding

What not to wear…

As a guest, please don’t EVER wear jeans, sneakers, flip-flops or any kind of casual street wear to a wedding. It might seem obvious to a lot of people, but you’d be surprised! I was recently at a wedding where one gentleman seemed to think it was OK to wear dirty, stained jeans, an American flag t-shirt (flags were present on both sleeves and on the chest…) while everyone else was wearing their Sunday best. Needless to say he stood out…

At another wedding I attended, I saw a young lady wearing a playboy necklace, a strapless skin tight pink mini-dress, and platform heels…

Brides, grooms and their friends and families work hard to make that special day memorable. Out of respect for them, the least a guest can do is dress up for the event.  Even for an informal wedding, men are expected to wear slacks and sports jackets, women street length dresses.

Other “don’t”s:
-never wear white to a wedding (never upstage the bride)
-anything too revealing (no over the top cleavage, or anything above mid-thigh)
-anything that has holes or stains
-anything sleeveless or strapless to a religious ceremony (you may bring a shawl to cover your shoulders)

….and if in doubt, ask the bride upon receiving your invitation!
